It’s part of the creative process…I promise.

I enjoy taking long walks. For one, it’s exercise and at my age, it’s required. But the real reason I enjoy my treks outside (aside from the absolutely stunning scenery the Palmetto State has to offer) is it’s my time to brainstorm and to create some good old fashioned writing magic.

I’ve come running into the house and thrown myself onto my old, uncomfortable  weathered chair and typed what I had just created during my bonding time with Mother Nature. Recently, after one of my long walks, I literally ran inside my house, slid into my chair and began typing like a maniac. My husband said something to me and I muttered like a cave woman, “Have to type this now.” I may have even grunted. I should’ve pounded on my chest, too- that would’ve proven my point. But I think he’s learned to not bother me when the creative juices are flowing.

Things happen on these walks. I’ve come up with dialogue between characters and have even gestured and acted them out while walking through the neighborhood. Makes me wonder if the neighbors will start running away from me when they see me coming. I guess I need to shout “It’s part of the creative process.. I promise. I’m not crazy! I’m talking for my characters right now.” That may not offer them any consolation. They’ll probably just nod politely and then lock their doors.

My walks have proven to be major inspiration. Maybe that’s what Jane Austen did? Perhaps it was on a long walk through the beautiful English countryside that she came up with Mr. Darcy’s famous line “She’s tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me.” I bet she even acted it out  – gestures, facial expressions, and all.

I have some crazy ideas right as I’m falling asleep. I don’t know if it’s that I’m half dreaming and my subconcious starts kicking in or what but there have been times when I’m just about to fall asleep and I sit straight up in bed and have to write something down. Don’t know where I’d be without my notebook by my side!

Keeping a notebook near you is a great idea!
